Volunteer to teach English to children from disadvantaged families and give them reason to succeed in life. With globalization and increasing inflow of tourism, the importance of English is growing everyday in Thailand. Today, families and schools demand their kids to speak fluently in English and write well. Yet in Thailand even the teachers aren’t trained well or not skilled enough to teach the students properly. As the result, the students struggle. With our volunteers help the project is hoping to change this and make young children of Surin confident English speakers capable of working hard to improve their futures.
No specific skills or qualifications are required to volunteer in the project. You should however have passion to work for the children and be fluent in English. Volunteers must also respect Thai custom and local people at all times.
Volunteers will work from Monday to Thursday and have 3 days off to explore other areas of Thailand. You will start your work from 9 am and finish at 3.30 pm. You will also have an hour off for lunch from 11.30 am.
You will start your activities by looking back and revising previous day’s work. You will then teach English using the official curriculum and volunteers are also encouraged to use their personal initiatives to make the class interesting. You can for instance hold debates and discussions and this will encourage the students to participate and comprehend English better. After 3 pm, volunteers can also participate in after school activities.
Surin is known has the elephant province in Thailand. This is because of the large number of elephants that are domesticated and the elephant festival that takes place very year that draws large number of crowds. Surin is one of the poorest region in Thailand and overwhelmingly agrarian. There are many interesting things to see around Surin including visiting Cambodia as it’s a border town. Surin also has a sizeable expatriate community.
