Travel to Xela, the city situated in the highlands of Guatemala and known for indigenous culture, and join the Women Support Project to help educate and empower women facing deep-rooted discrimination.
Guatemala is a male dominated society. But today, more and more women are going out to work, are staying longer in education, and expressing themselves more freely than ever before. Yet, the women constantly face backlash for being brave. For the women from poorer areas who are illiterate, they face even worse discrimination such as physical abuse. This project is working to educate and empower these disadvantage women. They hope that by doing this, these women will become strong and independent and break the shackles tying them to their conditions.
The project welcomes only women volunteers with at least an intermediary knowledge of Spanish. You will work both in the central office as well as in the field to help women give awareness, education, and skills to make the women independent.
The project works with vulnerable women to empower and embolden them. Many of these women have suffered physical abuse. They need help and proper guidance. Our volunteers will be involved in awareness and educational programs, and will also impart skills through which the women can learn to sustain themselves. This is a government funded project but needs volunteers to help local staff. Our volunteers will also work in administration translating many materials into English (if your Spanish is good enough), planning projects, and writing reports.

The project only welcomes female volunteers. You must be 18 or above and your Spanish must be at least intermediate. No other specific skills and qualifications are required to volunteer in this project. Volunteers should also be flexible, practical and self-motivated with an open mind to learn about new culture.
