If you said yes to at least one of these questions then joining a volunteer in Nepal program could be the perfect way to turn your dream into a reality.
Nepal is a fascinating country, with diverse terrain ranging from snow covered mountains to lush green fields, forests and valleys, and a population which is just as eclectic.
The people originate from several countries, and between them speak over 100 languages, but one thing many of them share is the blight of poverty. Just over 25% of the population lives in poor conditions; struggling to eat, stay healthy and educate their children.

Just a week or two out of your life can help people in need achieve change which lasts a lifetime, and with Nepal volunteer programs offered in fields such as education, child care, conservation and more there is a project to suit you, wherever your interest and skills lay.
Work In An Orphanage In Nepal
Nepal orphanage volunteer programs are quite literally life preservers for lots of innocent youngsters. Having survived civil war and bouts of violence many were left orphaned, or abandoned to life on the streets.
RCDP are helping to change this situation by supporting more than eight orphanages dotted around Nepal, all of which provide shelter, love, educational opportunities and life skills to children.
Volunteers help with a variety of tasks, including teaching basic English, and planning fun activities which develop creativity. Signing up for a volunteer orphanage Nepal program lets you help these kids in a practical and immensely meaningful way, in both the short and the long term.
Skills/Qualifications Needed: Volunteer orphanage Nepal programs don’t require you to have particular qualifications, but a patient, understanding, and flexible attitude is crucial. The children who call the orphanage home really love getting to know and spend time with volunteers like you, and they appreciate the attention, care, love and kindness directed their way.
Volunteer Responsibilities: On this program you can expect to follow a routine, which includes teaching English classes for three or four hours a day, either in the orphanage itself or at the local school where the children are pupils.
An alternative option is to stay back and help orphanage staff care for the babies and pre-school children. The rest of your working day involves supporting the youngsters with life skills such as personal hygiene and nutrition, with evenings spent organizing fun sporty or creative activities, or even helping with homework if students ask for extra support.
Nepal orphanage volunteers may also be asked to lend a hand with general daily tasks like gardening and serving meals.
Teaching English in Nepal (Kathmandu, Chitwan, Pokhara)
Volunteer English teachers in Nepal play an important role in the lives of the students they work with on a project. Whether based in a Kathmandu government school, or under-resourced rural schools in Pokhara and Chitwan, your work is invaluable, as few families can fund private lessons.
This may be the only opportunity these students have to study English while in the primary stage of compulsory education. Even learning the basics of the language will give these keen and willing students an advantage when they begin high school, where English is compulsory.
Skills/Qualifications Needed: You don’t need to have any special qualifications or experience to join an RCDP volunteer teaching in Nepal program, apart from being a native or fluent English speaker with strong skills in both writing and speaking the language.
The most important thing is that volunteers are interested in teaching, and can be a top class role model for their young students, as well as being a patient, reliable and easy going kind of person.
Volunteer Responsibilities: When you join a volunteer Nepal English teaching project you can expect to work six days a week, for two or three hours a day. Alongside a local teacher you will plan and deliver basic conversation classes to students aged between 6 and 13.
Each age group has a book you can use to plan, and you are able to take either a lead or assisting role in class, depending on your previous experience and confidence level.
This leaves plenty of time each day to organize some creative and fun activities like singing, painting, dancing and so on, help students who need it with their homework, and basically do any other tasks that come up as and when.
Work in a Medical/Healthcare Project (Kathmandu, Chitwan)
Unfortunately the health care system in Nepal is chronically understaffed and under resourced, especially in medical facilities based outside the richer areas of major cities. This means that people living in rural communities or deprived neighborhoods in the suburbs struggle to get adequate healthcare.
Nepal medical volunteers play a vital role in helping to fill these gaps, supporting doctors and assisting with basic tasks, in line with their individual backgrounds and qualifications.
Skills/Qualifications Needed: People from all backgrounds are welcome to apply to join a Nepal volunteer medical program. Whether you have medical training, related qualifications, or simply a keen interest in helping provide decent healthcare provision to those who really need it, there is a place for you. Age is not a barrier either, as volunteers range from students to the retired.
Volunteer Responsibilities: While everyone is welcome to join RCDPs medical volunteer Nepal program the actual tasks assigned once you are in place is determined by your background, relevant experience and proven qualifications.
Everyone will be kept busy, of course, and all work volunteers do is very much appreciated, and important for the overall success of the projects. Whether it’s recording a patient’s height, weight and blood pressure, or dispensing medicines, dressing wounds and advising villagers on how to improve their health – without people like you many poor people in Nepal would miss out on vital health care.
Teaching Young Buddhist Monks (Kathmandu and Pokhara)
Although most residents of Nepal follow the Hindu religion, the influences of Buddhism, a well tolerated rival, are easy to spot in various aspects of culture, architecture and lifestyle.
There are many attractive monasteries dotted around the country, and joining a Nepal monastery volunteer program lets you spend time teaching English to the resident monks, and glimpse aspects of Buddhist culture few others will ever have the chance to experience. How amazing is that?
Skills/Qualifications Needed: There are no special restrictions on who can volunteer in a Buddhist monastery in Nepal, however, as the monks live a very disciplined lifestyle structured by various rules you should be willing and able to respect, and fit in with, this way of life while you are taking part in the program.
Volunteer Responsibilities: Volunteers on a Nepal teaching Buddhist monks project deliver English lessons in either village schools or at a Kathmandu monastery.
The average workload you can expect is around 3-4 hours of English teaching a day, supplemented by relevant admin duties and early evening activities which are based around your creative skills.
This is a great way for volunteers to share their interest in topics like drawing, singing and dancing, or to organize sporting and other games. It’s not all work and no play though, as you will have mornings, and the later part of the evenings, free. During these periods the monks are happy for you to join them for meditation and prayers if you choose to.

Volunteer Program Fees & Dates
RCDP Nepal volunteer Program starts every 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month.
Every year, hundreds of volunteers arrive in Nepal to volunteer from UK and USA based organizations and end up paying up to $2500 to volunteer for 2 weeks. However, RCDPoffers the most affordable program fee.Our program fee starts as low as $180. The program fee is divided in as registration fee ($269) and weekly fee.
In Nepal, in addition to volunteer programs, RCDP runs many projects to help poor children and orphanages. We are presently running 2 orphanages in Nepal and school construction/renovation program (for detail, visit:http://www.rcdpnepal.org/about_rcdp/achievements.php). Majority of your program fee is used for your program. However, as RCDP aims is to support poor communities and children, we use remaining saving (if any left) to run or manage our orphanages and community projects.
Weekly fee is divided between room/3 local foods a day (50%) and project donation/support of local project staffs (50%). This allocation may be different depending up on location, project type etc. However, our coordinator will explain these issues before you pay the fee.

When you join an RCDP volunteer program in Nepal a strong support/supervision system is provided by local staff, who also organize your accommodation and meals. This leaves you free to focus on your project work, and enjoy all Nepal offers.
Although living standards are naturally going to be different to those you enjoy at home, all Kathmandu based Nepal volunteers live in a shared house known as ‘home-base’. Located in a safe area and reserved entirely for overseas volunteers, there are plenty of convenient services such as restaurant, cafes and all food stores close by, and most projects are within a mile or two so commuting each day is easy.
Volunteers get to enjoy three meals of traditional Nepali food a day, with breakfast, lunch (at home or to take out), and dinner, all prepared for them by local cooks.
You can feast on dishes including local style bread, curry, rice, dhal, chapatti and pickles. If you are in the mood for international food it is easy to buy some and prepare it yourself.
