The volunteer experience was very eye-opening and I felt very much needed at the site. I would greatly recommend it.

What volunteer opportunities are available in China

Education can be truly life changing, and RCDP are proud to be involved with several amazing opportunities for you to get involved with shaping the future of deserving young people. We offer both volunteer and paid volunteer teaching opportunities in China. Whichever route you choose promises to be meaningful, exciting, and deliver memories which will last a lifetime.

Volunteer English Teaching In China

volunteers in China Teaching As China modernizes at a fast pace more and more employers and colleges expect applicants to have strong English skills. In some areas this is not a problem as the schools provide comprehensive study programs, but the situation isn’t so bright in rural areas. Populated largely by farmers and people from lower economic groups, there are less opportunities to learn at school, especially from a fluent English speaker.

RCDP help address this problem by placing those who wish to volunteer in China and teach English into public schools which need this extra support.

Skills/Qualifications Needed: Neither special qualifications nor previous experience are necessary if you want to volunteer to teach English in China. This unpaid position is open to both native and fluent non-native English speakers, though the latter do need to have strong skills in reading and writing in English too.

Volunteer Responsibilities: The main focus on volunteer teaching English in China programs is on boosting student’s conversation skills. Disadvantaged young people who have not had any chance to communicate directly with a fluent English speaker may be a little shy or embarrassed during classes, so part of your role will be to create lessons which encourage participation and build confidence. Otherwise your duties will probably differ depending on the project, and the abilities of the local teaching staff you work with.

Paid Teaching In China

volunteers in china paid teaching A great way to experience another culture and explore an amazing country is to teach English in China on a project which pays a monthly salary of up to $800, [a sum which goes a very long way in this region].

RCDP offer both long and short term teaching jobs in China, so it’s easy to find the perfect project to fit your schedule. As a teacher you get to share your language knowledge with students keen to learn and improve their future prospects and gain invaluable practical experience, while having plenty of free time to explore and enjoy a fascinating and ancient culture. (A fee, which includes the cost of insurance, is payable on joining this project.)

Minimum Qualification/Skills : Through our program you can teach English in China with no experience behind you, but all applicants must be native speakers from a country where English is the official first language.

In general this means the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. Relevant qualifications are not essential either, though higher salaries are paid if you have a college degree, or an accredited TEFL type certificate.

Salary/Benefits: All teachers on this China English teaching program enjoy free accommodation and either main meals in a school cafeteria, or vouchers to buy and prepare their own food. Other benefits include access to a free health clinic on site, local support staff to call on, help with the visa application process, and airfare costs refunded, (10+ months contracts only).

Monthly salaries depend on your experience and qualifications, with higher rates paid for English degree holders, a year of previous teaching experience or a relevant certificate in teaching English.

The Fee and Dates

RCDP Xi'an, China Program starts every 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month, or any day of the month if it is difficult for you to arrange your travel plan

Every year hundreds of volunteers arrive in China to volunteer from UK and USA based organizations and end up paying up to $2500 to volunteer for 2 weeks. Unfortunately, only a small portion of that money actually goes to host projects and host families. The local host projects (orphanages and school) in China despite being well organized still need support from volunteers. In our program, you will pay your fee directly to host families and projects up on arrival in China. When you join our China volunteer program, we will make sure that all of your money goes to the projects and host families. Part of your fees also helps us to cover our expenses. The program fee is divided in as registration fee ($269) and weekly fee ($.. per week for room, food, coordination, and project donation).

Click to find the allocation of $269

In China, weekly fee is divided between room/3 local foods a day (50%) and project donation/support of local project staffs (50%). This allocation may be different depending up on locations, project types etc. However, our coordinator will explain these issues before you pay the fee. Please find below the break down of cost in a weekly basis.

Arrangements for Room/Food/Supervision

Volunteers in China on our programs generally have three choices for accommodation: a ‘home-base’ (volunteer house), hostel, and host family. All are safe, comfortable and secure, but there are some important differences between them. The home-base option, which is usually reserved for volunteers only, provides shared rooms and a cook who makes and serves three meals a day.

The hostel option may house students and other staff members, and food is eaten in a canteen together, while the host family experience usually means you get a private room and eat with the family.

Chinese food is often healthy and always delicious, but it may take volunteers in China a while to get used to it. For example steamed turnip cake or noodles are popular breakfast staples, along with soy milk. If that is a struggle there are usually bakeries and markets around selling more familiar basics like bread, peanut butter and yogurt. Lunch and dinner meals are often based around rice or noodles, meat and vegetables.

We provide comprehensive support to our China volunteers; with regular check ins to make sure all is well, and a local coordinator who is available 24/7.
