Is a volunteer Kenya experience on your bucket list? Would you love to see one of Africa’s beautiful countries, but also do something amazing to help the people who live there? Are you looking for an experience which has meaning and worth?
RCDP can meet all these needs with our range of volunteer opportunities in Kenya.
Imagine having time to explore the beaches, mountains and national parks of Kenya, the chance to see wildlife, picture postcard scenery, to visit both cities and villages, and basically drink in all this amazing country has to offer. No wonder tourists visit in great numbers.
Unfortunately the income they generate doesn’t benefit all members of society, and many people live in poor conditions, with little access to education and adequate healthcare.
RCDP work closely with some community-led initiatives set up to overcome these problems. By organizing volunteer programs in Kenya to support these local projects we provide extra hands to help facilitate change.
If this sounds interesting why not contact us for more details? Or if you are sure it is your thing you could even enroll right now, and start making that dream come true.
The volunteer experience was very eye-opening and I felt very much needed at the site. I would greatly recommend it.

What kind of volunteer opportunities are available in Kenya?
Choosing to volunteer in Kenya is a life changing experience for both yourself and the amazing people you meet along the way. Even one week of your time is enough to help those in need find the help and hope they need to move forward. In Kenya you may work in an orphanage, teach English or help sick people get much needed medical care and treatment – whatever you do will make a difference that lasts a lifetime.
Orphanage Project in Kenya
Kenyan children living in orphanages are there for several reasons. Some have lost parents to illness, especially AIDS, others are victims of poverty. RCDP works with several children’s homes around the city, providing volunteer Kenya orphanage placements for people with big hearts and a love of children to work on.
Skills/Qualifications Needed: You don’t need any special qualifications or work experience to volunteer at an orphanage in Kenya, but being a kind, patient, flexible and understanding person is essential regardless.
Volunteer Responsibilities: Volunteers in Kenya’s orphanages generally do a variety of things during their stay. Of course the children are the focus and the priority, and offering them both English tutoring and fun leisure activities will take up the majority of your time. You may also be asked to help with domestic chores and admin work sometimes.
Teaching English Project in Kenya
Kenya has a general shortage of teachers partly because many have left the country for work elsewhere, and also due to recent policy changes, which made primary school age education free and caused a sudden rise in the number of children attending.
This situation is even more acute in rural and suburban areas. RCDP offer volunteer teaching Kenya programs to help address this critical issue, and everyone who signs up will enjoy an extremely rewarding and meaningful experience.
Please note that the schools are closed for holidays in April and May, and then again in August and September. Alternative placements are available during these periods if you wish to work with children in another setting.
Skills/Qualifications Needed : As this project involves being the only teacher in the classroom it is mandatory that all teaching volunteers have either an education degree or extensive teaching experience. Proof of credentials or experience is required before everything is confirmed.
Volunteer Responsibilities: Your role is to teach English, and although most classes will be led solely by yourself it is possible to shadow a local teacher at first to get familiar with things. This can be helpful as you must follow the curriculum set by the government, although you are free to deliver lessons in your own style. Kenyan students respond well to interesting classes and lively activities.
You will be working with students aged five to sixteen in either the primary or lower secondary sector.
Health/Medical Projects in Kenya
Hospitals based outside of the inner cities are always short of staff, so volunteers are crucial to help staff deliver medical care to residents in rural areas.
Most projects work out of small, community based clinics, and as a Kenya medical volunteer you will assist qualified doctors with various tasks.
Skills/Qualifications Needed: People from any age or background can become a medical volunteer in Kenya, as specialist qualifications or previous experience is not necessary. Of course if you have either or both then your duties may be quite different from a volunteer who has only a desire to help the disadvantaged and sick.
Volunteer Responsibilities: Regardless of your background volunteers are not allowed to do certain tasks, primarily surgical operations or patient diagnosing; however there are plenty of things to get involved with.
Health volunteers may conduct basic checks on sick patients, which usually means measuring height, weight, blood pressure and temperature, or help local health workers treat minor injuries. Some volunteers may get involved in health education campaigns to help local people learn how to stay healthy or avoid certain diseases.
The Fee and Dates
RCDP Kenya Program starts every 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month.
Every year hundreds of volunteers arrive in Kenya to volunteer from UK and USA based organizations and end up paying up to $2500 to volunteer for 2 weeks. Unfortunately, only a small portion of that money actually goes to host projects and host families. The local host projects (orphanages, school, and local NGOs) in Kenya are poor and need external support to run their programs. In our program, you will pay your fee directly to host families and projects up on arrival in Kenya. When you join our program, we will make sure that all of your money goes to the projects and host families. Part of your fees also helps us to cover our expenses. The program fee is divided in as registration fee ($269) and weekly fee ($80 per week for room, food, coordination, and project donation).
Click to find the allocation of $269
Weekly fee is divided between room/3 local foods a day (50%) and project donation/support of local project staffs (50%). This allocation may be different depending up on location, project type etc. However, our coordinator will explain these issues before you pay the fee. Please find below the break down of cost in a weekly basis.

RCDP’s staff based in Kenya take care of arranging accommodation and meals for those on a volunteer Kenya program. This may be in a volunteer house or with a host family who are experienced at providing a second home for overseas volunteers. Both options are safe, comfortable and convenient for your project work.
In the Home Base (volunteer house) a cook will prepare three traditional meals a day for you, while the host family do the same for the Kenya volunteers. Kenyan food is delicious, and reflects the mix of ethnic backgrounds of the various groups who live there. Meals tend to be based around starches like potatoes, corn and maize, beans and meat. You may also be served chicken curry and Indian flat bread (chapatti).
Local RCDP staff are always on hand to make sure all is well on your project, offer support and answer any queries you may have. Plus our local coordinator is based close by, and on hand 24/7 if you need to make contact at any time.
