Do you dream about visiting Africa? Would you love the opportunity to volunteer in Ghana? Does exploring a new culture while lending a helping hand sound like a good plan for you?
RCDP have several exciting volunteer opportunities in Ghana for you to choose between.
They are all well-structured, designed to deliver a meaningful experience for all involved, safe, affordable and interesting. Ghana is a country on the way up, with a blooming oil and tourist industry channeling wealth and extra resources into the pockets of these warm and friendly people. Unfortunately not every citizen is set to benefit from this economic upturn.
In some areas, especially those which are rural, many still live in poverty, often with inadequate housing, and underfunded understaffed schools and healthcare facilities. By choosing to volunteer in Ghana you can make a huge and long term difference to this situation. Our programs support local grassroots projects which help those in crisis, without creating long term dependency. Never doubt that your contribution to these schemes will last for many lifetimes.
Why not contact us for more information on these exciting opportunities, or if you already found your ideal opportunity you can simply enroll right now.
The volunteer experience was very eye-opening and I felt very much needed at the site. I would greatly recommend it.

What kind of volunteer opportunities are available in Ghana?
Our Ghana volunteer opportunities are always meaningful for both volunteers and recipients, and they are designed to help create long term changes. As a volunteer you may send a few weeks teaching English, caring for orphaned children or supporting medical staff as they treat the poor and vulnerable; but your love, care and effort will live on as the people you met gain confidence, self esteem and better health.
Orphanage Project in Ghana
No child should have to grow up without parents, but sadly many youngsters in Ghana face this exact future as a result of social and health problems such as HIV/AIDS. Having lost their loving family to this cruel condition they are a high risk of living on the streets and drifting into street crime. Ghana orphanage volunteer programs are operated by RCDP and their generous partners around the world, designed to provide a safe, warm environment for street kids to access without fuss. These provide a bed, meals, love and access to education to needs kids, but as resources and finances are permanently stretched a lot of help is needed to keep things running smoothly.
Skills/Qualifications Needed: You don’t need any childcare qualifications or even any practical experience to volunteer on a Ghana orphanage program, so long as you have a caring nature and are keen to help improve the lives of children who have faced many disadvantages and losses in their young lives.
Volunteer Responsibilities: Ghana orphanage volunteers are needed to help with lots of different tasks, such as teaching English – or other subjects - helping with housekeeping work and at mealtimes, and organizing sporty activities. Of course these young people also need a lot of love and attention, so just hanging out and talking or playing with them is a valuable thing to do. You may find that your duties are split between more manual tasks in the daytime when many children are at school, with creative and educational activities taking place when they come back to the orphanage.
Teaching English Project in Ghana
Teenagers and young people in Ghana are well aware that being able to speak, read and write English well is vital if they want to do well at university or in the job market. Sadly they don’t all have the opportunity to achieve this goal as government school English lessons are not always very good. Our volunteer teaching in Ghana programs try to address this problem by introducing native speakers in to the classroom to inspire and refresh the learning environment.
Note: Ghana’s schools run in three month terms, with a one month vacation between them. Special holiday classes are provided during the breaks, which may mean schedules are slightly different from term time.
Skills/Qualifications Needed: While formal teaching qualifications or experience are always welcome neither is essential to volunteer on a teaching program in Ghana. If you can teach subjects such as math, science or computing instead the students would really appreciate it. Naturally, a strong commitment to helping children learn in a positive way is essential.
Volunteer Responsibilities: In Ghana our teaching volunteers work in all levels of compulsory education, from primary to high school. Qualified participants can take charge of classes and teach solo, while others will mostly assist local staff. Either way it is important you arrive with some ideas for activities and methods which work well with large groups as you could have up to 60 children in one class!
Health/Medical Projects
Joining our public health volunteer in Ghana program is the best way to help get decent healthcare services to people living in rural areas, and reduce the number of people who suffer from preventable and treatable conditions. Your role on a project like this basically involves helping the nurses at a clinic, or the medical staff who work in the community. Duties assigned will vary but could include treating minor wounds and injuries, helping staff during patient consultations and dispensing medicines.
Skills/Qualifications Needed: You don’t need to have any medical experience or qualifications to pursue a Ghana public health volunteer opportunity as there are roles available for those with and without such things. A strong interest in this type of work is of course important. Age is no barrier either, so students are as welcome as seniors.
Volunteer Responsibilities: The tasks assigned to you will depend mainly on your background, but also on the needs of a clinic at any particular time. If you have no practical experience or theoretical knowledge you will spend more time observing and assisting, along with being assigned some basic healthcare tasks; on the other hand, if you are a medical stream student or qualified professional already you can expect to be given a lot of autonomy and more responsibility.
The Fee and Dates
RCDP Ghana volunteer program starts every 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month.
Every year hundreds of volunteers arrive in Ghana to volunteer from UK and USA based organizations and end up paying up to $2500 to volunteer for 2 weeks. Unfortunately, only a small portion of that money actually goes to host projects and host families. The local host projects (orphanages, school, and local NGOs) in Ghana are poor and need external support to run their programs. In our program, you will pay your fee directly to host families and projects up on arrival in Ghana. When you join our program, we will make sure that all of your money goes to the projects and host families. Part of your fees also helps us to cover our expenses. The program fee is divided in as registration fee ($269) and weekly fee ($80 per week for room, food, coordination, and project donation).

In Ghana, weekly fee is divided between room/3 local foods a day (50%) and project donation/support of local project staffs (50%). This allocation may be different depending up on location, project type etc. However, our coordinator will explain these issues before you pay the fee.

Volunteer projects in Ghana may be a fabulous way to travel and give something back to the country, but it is only natural to feel a little apprehensive before you arrive and get started. That’s why RCDP organize things like your accommodation and food ahead of time, giving you peace of mind. Most volunteers in Ghana stay with a host family. These specially chosen households are trustworthy and kind, and staying with them provides a unique and valuable insight into how Ghanaians live their lives.
Three meals a day are provided for you, and the menus will differ depending on which ethnic group you stay with. Most are planned around a starch like rice, served with soup or sauce containing a vegetable or protein like fish or meat. Herbs, spices and pulses are also popular and may appear each mealtime.
Ghana volunteers enjoy a high level of support from local staff, who monitor your progress regularly when you are on site, and someone is available 24 hours a day if you need anything out of working hours.
