Brazilians love life and they live it to the best of their ability, with a vibrant and noisy culture which can overwhelm the senses of first time visitors. However, as the country develops and grows richer the gap between those who are doing well and those left behind grows ever wider, reducing the opportunities for bright youngsters to escape from their shanty town legacies.
Taking up one of our volunteer opportunities in Brazil is a decision you will never regret; a unique opportunity to explore a wonderful country, while also getting to know the real Brazil, from the street up.

Childcare Project in Brazil
In Brazil’s poorest areas, (known as favelas, or shanty towns), young people marry and start families at a younger age than the average Brazilian couple. However, being on low incomes they struggle to manage a full time job, or complete their education and also pay for childcare – as most nursery facilities are simply too expensive for them to manage.
RCDP provide childcare volunteer programs in Brazil where the children can be cared for, while their parents strive to secure a better future for them all. Based in favelas in the northern section of Rio de Janeiro, these projects have proved to be invaluable resources for the local community.
Skills/Qualifications: The only qualification needed to join a Brazil childcare volunteer program is a genuine interest in caring for and playing with youngsters, and a kind, patient, and understanding nature. At least a basic understanding of Portuguese would be an advantage, but it isn’t essential.
Volunteer Responsibilities: As a volunteer on a childcare in Brazil project your role is basically to help local staff provide all aspects of care to the babies and young children who attend the crèche. Typically this includes duties such as serving meals, supervising naps and playtime and teaching basic English through games and activities.
English Teaching Project in Brazil
When strong English skills are pretty much essential to secure a decent job in the dominant and fast growing hospitality market those who don’t have this ability are destined to miss out. This is often the case for students from low income families who attend schools unable to afford or attract competent English speaking teachers.
As a volunteer teaching English in Brazil you bridge this gap, and provide opportunities which will benefit young people for the rest of their lives.
Short term stays are possible, but do note this project doesn’t run between January and March as schools are closed for vacation.
Skills/Qualifications: You don’t need any special qualifications, or even to have any previous experience to volunteer in Brazil on a teaching English project, although obviously an interest in working with young people, a flexible, caring and nurturing attitude, and native or near native English skills are all vital. Some understanding of Portuguese is an advantage, but not a deal breaker.
Volunteer Responsibilities: Teaching in Brazil project volunteers work in local schools, alongside classroom teachers who help with communication issues. Your duties can be quite varied, and may include planning and leading classes covering conversational English, lending a hand to children struggling with homework, organizing creative sessions around art, sports, music and so on, as well as helping with admin and fundraising tasks.
Teaching Computer Project
In Brazil the hospitality and tourism field is growing fast, and it provides a real chance for many to get a better paid job and escape shanty town living. Providing, that is, that applicants for such posts have adequate computer skills. Without those in a high tech world they have no chance at all of switching to a more lucrative employment sector. Recognizing this problem, RCDP offer a Brazil volunteer computer teacher program, which sends volunteers with knowledge to community meeting points like schools and churches, where they teach classes on basics such as using the Internet and operating Word, which local people can attend.
Skills/Qualifications: Computer skills volunteer teaching projects in Rio are open to the entire community, so you should feel confident about working with people from all age groups, and be able to explain concepts calmly and well. Formal teaching or computing qualifications are not necessary, but some understanding of Portuguese is highly recommended.
Volunteer Responsibilities: You will work with both adults and children, many of whom may be new to computing. We ask that volunteers are patient, well prepared, and able to communicate key terms and instructions at a level students can follow. Apart from the basics some classes will involve teaching Word, Excel and so on. Those with specialist knowledge may be asked to help repair databases or do other technical tasks.
Youth Athletics Project
All kinds of sporting and athletic events are the lifeblood of Brazilian culture, and like every city the world over the streets of Rio have children playing their version of soccer and basketball.
Sadly, even if they are very talented it’s unlikely they could ever become professional. Few will even learn how to play things like soccer properly. To instigate change RCDP provides sport volunteerism in Brazil programs which run in the neediest areas of Rio.
Joining a youth athletics volunteer project is a great way to encourage all children to be active, improve their health, build their sporting skills, and have a little fun in a life which can be quite bleak. Your work with kids from local community groups and schools is guaranteed to have a positive effect on the youngster’s lives, and ultimately make their future brighter. Plus there’s no need to commit to a long term project, as even short stay volunteers make a great difference. If this sounds like something you really care about then - Enroll Now.
Skills/Qualifications: So long as you like spending time with children, and both love playing and understand the rules of one or more sport you are qualified to join this youth sports coaching in Brazil project. Basic Portuguese speaking skills are a major advantage, but not essential.
Volunteer Responsibilities: On this project your primary role is to introduce or coach sports and activities to some very keen and excited children. Volunteers all have different skills, and all are welcome - so as well as soccer and volleyball you may teach young people how to skateboard, or to do a martial art; whatever you have a decent knowledge of is fine.
The Fee and Dates
When you join our program, we will make sure that your money goes to the projects and accommodation. Part of your fees also helps us to cover our expenses. The program fee is divided in as registration fee ($269) and weekly fee ($160 per week for room, food, coordination, and project donation).
Weekly fee is divided between accommodation and project donation/support of local project staffs. This allocation may be different depending up on location, project type etc. However, our coordinator will explain these issues before you pay the fee.

Brazil volunteer programs come with a variety of accommodation options, though your choices may be limited by availability, which depends on the time of year you plan to arrive. Generally December, January and February are the busiest months for programs in Rio.
Most volunteers in Brazil stay in a shared hostel room, where breakfast is included in the cost. Thee hostels are comfortable and safe, and a great way to meet other volunteers and travelers. Sometimes a private room in a shared apartment is on offer. This works like a relaxed homestay, as volunteers are expected to feed and entertain themselves.
RCDP offer comprehensive support to Brazil volunteers throughout their time on a program. Local staff are always contactable, and they will stay in regular touch to check in with you by phone, email or in person depending on the individual program.
