This project is ideal for students or professionals in the healthcare field. Volunteers will have the experience to see how healthcare in Ecuador is improving, but still developing. Volunteers will be working in hospitals, clinics, and NGO's. Each location has a different need for assistance. Volunteers can expect to be interacting and assisting with the patients and their needs. If your background permits, you may be directly administering drugs or facilitating serious healthcare conditions.
Volunteers should expect for this project to be very hands-on. In many of these healthcare facilities there is a lack of supplies, or staff. There is a great need for people of healthcare knowledge to come to this project and offer their skills and support. You will find this project both challenging and highly rewarding. The need for volunteers is high for this project.
Volunteers working in the medical/healthcare project must produce proof of healthcare certification or work experience. You'll have to furnish documents like medical student ID, EMT, paramedic certification, nursing, or physician's credentials. Our partnering hospitals/healthcare clinics require a copy of your resume. You must clearly state credentials and education. All this must be done before your arrival at your assigned project.
We will also prefer volunteers who can speak a little bit of Spanish as they will be able to communicate better with the patients and the staff at the project
Volunteers will be involved in the daily procedures of medical centers. You will observe or directly provide assistance to existing doctors and nurses. Volunteers may also be expected to assist nurseries, be involved in routine patient check-ups, and much more.
Volunteers may also provide much-needed assistant in various health "camps," distribute medication, provide tips to patients regarding proper health, nutrition, personal hygiene, sanitation as well as providing general counsel to in-need Ecuadorians. Qualified participants may also assist in treating minor wounds and ailments as well as record keeping.
This project is located in Quito, Ecuador's capital city. Quito is the former home of the Inca Empire and full of rich history that dates back to pre-Columbus times. Volunteers will find themselves in a city that offers great images of the past. Quito is full of both historic intrigue and modern day pleasures.
In general, Quito and the entire nation of Ecuador have many destinations for the volunteer to experience. The biodiversity of Ecuador will offer you a plentitude of natural wonders to seek out. Volunteers can take a trip to the Galapagos Islands to see the marine iguanas or visit Isla de La Plata that has reached global popularity for whale watching. There are numerous beaches where you can get some sun or go snorkeling. There is also the nearby Amazon Rainforest if you feel like having a tropical adventure. Volunteers are sure to find themselves with many options for things to do during their free time.
